Soccer Host Birch Run

Updated on 11/18/2022

The Freeland Boys Varsity Soccer team returned to action Monday night hosting the Birch Run Panthers in a conference match.

Freeland started fast and never looked back hitting the Panthers with an eight goal offensive explosion in the first half!  Dalton Polega led the Falcons attack with a pair of goals.  Other goal scorers were Max Royle, Derik Prast, Karson Prast, Tommy Roenicke, Jacob Loeffler, & Ethan Gosen.  Luke Farminer had two assists in the game.  Others assisting on goals included Gavin Spaulding, Mason Dix, Nate Niederquell, Zane Stanusek, Derik Prast, & Avery Thurston.  The brother to brother connection when Derik Prast set up Karson Prast’s goal was definitely a highlight of the night!

Final Score:  Freeland 8 Birch Run 0

The Falcons JV was also a winner Monday night 3-1 over Midland Cavalry Baptist.  Goal scorers for JV included Amani Niedzielski, Zane Stanuzek, & Graham Shepard.

Freeland (5-6-0) is right back in action at home on Wednesday night when they host the Essexville Garber Dukes.  Match time is 7p.

Soccer Wrap Up

Updated on 09/14/2022

The Freeland Boys Soccer teams were back in action on Tuesday night in conference play visiting the Bay City John Glenn Bobcats.

In the Varsity match, John Glenn jumped out early with goals in the 8th and 18th minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. Freeland fought back in the 23rd minute when Senior Striker Tommy Roenicke was fouled “in the box” and Junior Forward Luke Farminer converted the a penalty kick. 2-1 Bobcats at halftime.

As has often been the case this season, the Falcons came out strong in the second half. Just five minutes in, Senior Defender Lucas Colpaert tied the game on an assist from Senior Forward Jaime de Reina. The Falcons then took the lead 3-2 in the 17th minute when Junior Striker Ethan Gosen delivered on a pass from Luke Farminer. In the 25th minute, de Reina made it 4-2 with an assist from Sophomore midfielder Owen Senkowski. With just under 10 minutes to go Roenicke closed out the 4 goal second half blitz by the Falcons on yet another assist from de Reina.

Final Score: Freeland 5 BC John Glenn 2

The Falcons JV defeated John Glenn 8-0. Derik Prast led the attack with 4 goals! Kayden Rose, Ethan Gosen, Dale Williamson, and Josh Colpaert each had a single tally for Freeland.

The Freeland Boys Soccer Teams were back in action on Thursday night at home vs. the Alma Panthers.

In the varsity match, Alma got on the board first in the 13th minute to take an early 1-0 lead.  Ten minutes later, Senior Striker Tommy Roenicke found Sophomore Striker Derik Prast open with a pass and Prast fired the ball past the Panther goalkeeper to even the game up at 1-1.  With about 5 minutes remaining in the opening half, Senior Wing Hayden Jamie picked up a loose ball and made a great run down the right side.  Jamie made a picture perfect cross to Roenicke and Tommy made it count putting the Falcons ahead for the first time at 2-1!

The second half was a defensive battle… each team having scoring chances, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.  Kudos to the Freeland back line and Senior Goalkeeper Gavin Spaulding for making the first half one goal advantage stand up!

Final Score:  Freeland Falcons 2 Alma Panthers 1

Freeland also won the JV game by the same 2-1 score.  Freeland goals were scored by Jaime de Reina Sastre and Derik Prast.

Soccer Wrap Up

Updated on 09/09/2022

The Freeland Boys Varsity Soccer Team was back in action on a Saturday visiting Heritage in Saginaw Township.

It was an evenly played 1st Half with both teams trying to get a feel for the other. Heritage got on the board first in the 34th minute when a stray ball on a corner kick ended up as a penalty kick for the Hawks. Heritage converted the PK to take a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons bounced back and were able to apply some pressure… but were not able to convert any opportunities into a game tying goal. As the half was coming to a close, the Hawks launched a quick counter attack and got behind the Freeland defense. A breakaway goal made it 2-0 Heritage just before halftime.

The second half was relatively even play on both sides until inclement weather caused the match to be delayed. The weather didn’t lift during the suspended period… so the match ended at 2-0 in favor of the Hawks.

The Falcons JV did defeat Heritage 6-1 in the JV match before the varsity contest. Nice job JV!

Freeland (1-1-0) is back in action on Monday at 4:30p in the first conference match of the year at Essexville Garber.

8-22-22

The Freeland Boys Varsity Soccer Team returned to action on Monday afternoon visiting the Essexville Garber Dukes in the first conference match of the 2022 season.

The Falcons jumped out early and blitzed the Dukes with six goals in the first 27 minutes of the match! Senior Nate Niederquell led the early charge with a goal and three assists. Senior Tommy Roenicke had two goals and Senior Max Royle had a goal and an assist. Juniors Amani Niedzielski and Devon Williamson also scored goals as a part of the onslaught.

Garber rallied scoring three goals over the next ten minutes to cut the Falcons lead to 6-3… but Niederquell converted a pass from Junior Luke Farminer to stop the Dukes rally and give Freeland a 7-3 advantage at half.

As it has before, the depth of the Falcons wore down the Dukes in the second half. Goals by Roenicke, Niederquell, Senior Jaime de Reina, & Senior Dalton Polega closed out the match. The final score from Essexville was 11-3 in favor of the Falcons.

SCORING SUMMARY:

Goals: Niederquell (3), Roenicke (3), Niedzielski, Royle, Williamson, de Renia, & Polega

Assists: Niederquell (3), Royle (2), Senkowski (2), Spaulding, L. Farminer, de Renia, & D. Prast

Freeland (2-1-0) is back in action on Wednesday in a non-conference match at Bay City Western. Match time is 5p.

See you out there! Go Falcons! 💚⚽️

Freeland Falls to Frankenmuth

Updated on 09/09/2022

The Freeland Boys Varsity Soocer team hosted the Frankenmuth Eagles in a conference match at home on Monday evening.  The JV game was washed out by a late afternoon thunderstorm… but the weather cleared out in time for the varsity match.

The Falcons got on the board first when Senior Striker Tommy Roenicke converted a pass from Sophomore Midfielder Owen Senkowski in the 10th minute to make it 1-0 Freeland.  Ten minutes later, Frankenmuth tied it up on a nifty back heel cross that caught the Falcons defense off step.  The 1st half ended with the teams deadlocked at 1-1.

Freeland fought valiantly despite having to play 10 vs. 11 the entire second half.  The Eagles scored the go ahead goal in the 13th minute and got another on a penalty kick in the the 23rd minute to take a 3-1 lead.  The Falcons answered two minutes later on a set play off a restart.  Sophomore midfielder Zane Stanuszek hit Senior Nate Niederquell with a perfect ball that Nate knocked past the Eagles goalkeeper to pull the Falcons within one at 3-2.  However, Frankenmuth answered just three minutes later with a goal to put the game out of reach.

Final Score:  Frankenmuth 4 Freeland 2

Freeland (2-5-0) is right back in action on Wednesday late afternoon visiting crosstown rival Swan Valley.  Match time is 4:30p at Roberts Park.  Hope to see everybody out there!  Go Falcons!  💚⚽️

Varsity Soccer Opens With a Win

Updated on 08/24/2022

The Freeland Boys Varsity Soccer team kicked off the 2022 campaign with a 6-1 win over Bullock Creek last night on the Falcons home field.

Freeland had a 2-1 lead at halftime after a fairly evenly played first half.  Sophomore striker Derik Prast opened the scoring in the 15th minute with an assist from fellow sophomore midfielder Owen Senkowski.  After Bullock Creek tied the game on a penalty kick, the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick of their own just as time was expiring in the half.  Senior defender Dalton Polega converted the PK to give the Falcons the lead and momentum headed into the second half.

The first 15 minutes of the second half were much like the first… with even play on both sides.  However, the depth of the Freeland side appeared to be wearing down the Lancers.  Freeland broke through in the 17th minute on Prast’s second goal of the game… this one on a nifty pass from Senior midfielder Nate Niederquell.  Just two minutes later it was Niederquell again setting up Junior forward Ethan Gosen to make it 4-1 Falcons.

Freeland got two more second half goals… one from Senior Tommy Roenicke on a cross from fellow Senior Max Royle and the last in the closing minutes from Senkowski on a pass from Senior Hayden Jaime.

Freeland (1-0-0) is right back in action on Saturday with a match at Heritage.  The JV match begins at 10a and the Varsity follows at 11:30a.  Hope to see you out there!  Go Falcons!  💚⚽️
