September 1

Going back to back days the Falcon golfers traveled to the Fortress in Frankenmuth to play in the prestigious Patriot Cup.  Competing with some of the state's biggest schools and top teams, the girls finished 11th in a field of 18 teams.  On a hot day, and on a difficult course, Averie Pumford shot an 86, Zoey Markey a 100, Sophie Maxwell a 124, Katie Salo a 127, and Megan Hemgesberg a 129 for a team total of 437.  While certainly not our best results of the year, the girls learned a lot about their games and what it takes to play on demanding golf courses.  After a long weekend the girls will pick up play next Wednesday when some of them head back to the Fortress for a nine hole event.

Sept. 12

Girls golf traveled to St. Louis to compete in the Shark Classic at Hidden Oaks GC.  Starting on the most difficult holes on the course, the girls were a little rattled, but held their nerve playing the difficult back nine first to grind out results.  Moving into the more open front nine, our girls turned up the heat on the competition and won the event shooting a 400!  Averie Pumford was the medalist shooting an 80, followed by Zoey Markeys 6th place finish 96.  Reese Conlee shot a personal best and just missed out on top ten honors with a 108, and Sophie Maxwell rounded out the scoring with a 116.  Lilly Spencer was the fifth player for Freeland shooting a 129.  The girls will next travel to Pine River CC in Alma for the third TVC match of the year on Wednesday.  Our JV golfers will host Heritage on Tuesday September 13th.

Oct. 4

Our Falcon golfers headed to Williamston to compete in the Region 16 tournament at Wheatfield Valley GC.  Throughout the entire round it was a back and forth battle between us, Frankenmuth, and Flint Powers for the second and third position that would take us to states.  Late in the round and sitting in fourth place as a team, freshman Reese Conlee picked the perfect time to record her first competitive birdie draining a 35 foot putt when her playing competitor from Flint Powers scored a 6, catapulting us into second place with just two holes remaining.  In that two hole stretch our girls held their nerve and finished strong to claim second place in the region and book our 5th consecutive trip to the state finals!  Averie Pumford finished second overall with a 71 (+1), Zoey Markey put together her best ever regional finishing with an 85, Reese finished with a 92, and Lilly Spencer finished our scoring on the day with a 112.  Sophie Maxwell was one shot away from scoring position.  These girls showed tremendous spirit and grit in the closing holes and are excited to be heading to East Lansing to compete at Forest Akers East on October 14th and 15th!

Oct. 14 and 15

Our state qualifying lady Falcon golfers traveled to Forest Akers East in East Lansing to compete in the division 3 state finals for a fifth straight year.  After several days of solid practice, the girls felt ready to head down and compete with some of the best teams in the state and the best teams in our division.  Averie Pumford led the scoring for us, shooting 81-79 over the two rounds and finished 9th overall.  Zoey Markey finished her senior year scoring on both days with scores of 98-93, and will finish her season in the top ten for single season scoring average in the Freeland history books. Reese Conlee continued her fine freshman season by scoring on both days with 105-110.  And Sophie Maxwell and Lilly Spencer split scoring duties on the two days.  Sophie finished with scores of 116-111 and Lilly’s two day scores were 112-119.  It was a great trip and a valuable experience for all our girls.  Overall, we finished 16th out of 18 teams in one of the most challenging divisions in girls golf.  The entire season was awesome, and the comradery on and off the course made this one of the most memorable seasons in recent history!   Congratulations on a fantastic year girls!

SPECIAL JV WRITE UP

The girls junior varsity golf team finished their season at the Ithaca JV invite  where they finished third overall.  Although it was a JV invite, many teams brought juniors and seniors who had not had many varsity events during the year, and our girls played them very close.  Grace Erickson and Lizzie Robbins each earned top ten medals for their play on the day.  A first for both of them.  With the JV season ending, the coaching staff is very excited about the potential in this group of golfers with several of them posting scores at or near varsity level all season the future looks very bright for Freeland Girls Golf.  Congratulations on a great season of golf girls!

Girls Golf 2022-23

Updated on 08/16/2022

Golf practice will begin on August 9th at Twin Oaks Golf Course! There will be a 30-minute parent/player meeting at the course (patio if weather permits, at the high school if weather is bad) beginning at 6:30 pm. Practice will begin at 7 pm, and we will have tee times so the girls can play nine practice holes that night. The first four weeks of the season’s schedule are below. Most of our practices will be held at Twin Oaks, and some range days at The Sawmill. Please be aware that there will be dates and times specific for varsity players and JV players on the schedule. Due to the nature of golf and holding practices at a public facility, practice times do vary, and can change depending on course availability. Once school begins, we try to hold all of our practices at 3:30 as long as the course can accommodate us. We will be holding our first qualifiers of the season on August 10th, 11th, and 12th. The qualifier will be a total of 36 holes (9 holes on day 1 and 2, and 18 holes for select players on the third day) to select the six golfers to compete in the opening invite of the season. These qualifying rounds will be based on score and time. I will be asking that the girls can play their rounds under 3 hours and 30 minutes for 18 holes, and 1 hour and 45 minutes for nine holes. It is important that we learn to keep a good pace while walking the course. Golf is a sport where the courses are putting us into their normal play, so times may change and we may be asked to be flexible. Please be prepared for practice; clubs, tees, balls, ball markers, sharpie markers, water bottles, and proper dress (no ripped jeans, cut off shirts or shorts, sandals, etc.). We represent Freeland when on the course and we will conduct ourselves properly on the course both in dress and behavior. Players are allowed to use range finders if they have them, GPS apps on their phones, and pull carts. I highly recommend pull carts. All girls planning on playing golf should download the MHSAA golf app on their mobile device. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOUR ATHLETE WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE ATHLETIC REGISTRATION WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THE ATHLETICS WEB PAGE (freelandfalconathletics.bigteams.com) OR planeths.com IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN PRACTICE. The online registration will take the place of the green cards from previous years. Please be aware that you must have a current physical on file for the 2022-23 school year. Once the registration process is completed, we will be notified. Payment of the athletic registration fee is required before the first practice or tryout date. The registration fee can be paid on line as part of the registration, or dropped out at the high school.
